Bond

  for Julian

by E. Ethelbert Miller

We follow the souls of the dead to the river.
We plant our farewells near the banks of our hearts.
There is nothing to return home to except memories.
What we carry is the past - heavy with days.
Tomorrow the future will also depart.
We pray its journey will be a safe one.
We believe in love and the final destination of freedom.

E. Ethelbert Miller is a writer and literary activist. He is the author of several collections of poems and two memoirs and the board chair of the Institute for Policy Studies. His most recent book is The Collected Poems of E. Ethelbert Miller, edited by Kirsten Porter and published by Willow Books.
